Reading suggestions from book clubs

The Book Divas of Marlton, New Jersey recommend:
THE KNOWN WORLD by Edward P. Jones (Amistad, 2003), Fiction, 400 pages

"What type of leadership is best in a situation where blacks own blacks? It amazed us to consider a person, black or white or otherwise, who could actually own another individual, let alone consider a person who has seen or experienced slavery first-hand becoming a slave owner themselves. Some slave owners chose to be hard-edged while others were much more easy- going and friendly to their slaves. Does an easy- going, friendly approach make owning slaves 'okay'? We all liked this book because it opened our eyes to a whole world we were unaware of, and made us think about the many ways people bend rules to fit their own situations. We also discussed the cover design and how the author used an actual map from a slave family."

Paired with: Southern fried chicken, collard greens, sweet potato casserole, grits with corn bread, and pecan pie from a Southern bakery.
